Timberland: “XL Businesspark Twente gives us security”

The fact that Timberland’s strategic review of its business location in Europe ultimately worked out in Twente's favour is all down to the excellent infrastructure and stable employment conditions in the Twente region. “Added to that, we now have 15 years of experience in this region and we can transport our products in a relatively energy-friendly way from Rotterdam to Hengelo by boat,” says Mark van Onna, director of Timberland Europe BV. “We also have excellent working relationships with the regional transport companies and customs. Our specific customs permits are very important for our business operations.”

In Twente, the logical business location for Timberland was XL Businesspark Twente, which focuses on companies in the logistics, distribution or production sectors that require more than two hectares of land. Van Onna uses the word ‘security’ to describe the added value of XL Businesspark Twente for Timberland. “We’re creating space to grow in the future. The infrastructure is excellent and the park is right next to the A35 and a stone’s throw from the A1. And the collective fire-fighting water system and the solid security on the site are also very important. That total package gives us the security we need when making this kind of strategic decision.”

Working together to keep Timberland in the region
In the spring of 2008, Timberland’s Board of Directors began the reorientation process for the European distribution company’s business location. The signals coming from Timberland were loud and clear for Enschede City Council and it invested a lot of energy to keep Timberland in Enschede and Twente. With good results: in the end, Timberland again chose Twente as the location for its European logistical branch.
